I was born and raised in the high desert.
Unending space—constantly seen & felt—was my primary, formative experience of landscape.
I grew up with a resonant sense of existing in proportion to a visibly vaster reality.
My practice is a psychological and aesthetic exploration
of the connection between place and identity.
I’m specifically interested in the process of internalizing vastness,
and the capacity of place to offer a generative space where conceptions of the self
may be dissolved and experienced anew.
My work responds to diverse indoor and outdoor landscapes,
and I use materials that evoke qualities of expansiveness, both literal and perceptual —
that is, both external and internal.
The materials mimic the elements and processes of an expansive landscape,
while also referencing the human impulse to respond through the creation of our own
structures and shelters. I manipulate the materials minimally, allowing their
intrinsic properties to drive the creative process.
Ultimately, my practice seeks to balance deference to expanse
with an integrated, responsive assertion of self.
