Evanescence ↬ 4 December 2014

My work blurs boundaries: between printmaking, sculpture, two- and three-dimensional space,
destruction/construction, inside/outside, past/present, and coexisting cultural identities and idioms.

I violently manipulate images of European art into constructive elements
which are evocative of the Brazilian aesthetic of self-built dwellings.
These elements are intuitively arranged and assembled:
the structural precariousness and fragility of the paper is evident to the viewer.

As destruction becomes construction, restoration of materials opens the space for potentiality.
My installations gain in depth when responding to space, especially if that space is charged with character.

I fell in love with the wooden beams, skylight and tall ceilings of
Gowanus Loft
an extraordinary expanse, perched on a cornice overlooking the most gotham-like side of Brooklyn.
Giant subway structures loom over heavy machinery working day and night
to repurpose a neighborhood already bustling with energy.

Through
Evanescence, I will have the opportunity to keep a large installation
in residence for 10 days, letting the work imbue the space in order to respond to it.
Resourcefulness, improvisation, adaptation, destruction and
reconstruction will be the keywords in this process.
