“María de Buenos Aires” ↬ 5-7 April 2019
Bare Opera × The Vanderbilt Republic invite you to experience an immersive re-imagining of María de Buenos Aires, revolutionary Argentine composer Astor Piazzola’s greatest musical and theatrical accomplishment.
Performances happen 5-7 April 2019 in The Bellewether at the Blue Building (222 East 46th Street 10017), an 8,000ft2 concatenation of project spaces in Midtown Manhattan dedicated to exquisite installation/performance immersions and photo/film production. This is Bare Opera’s 2nd production at The Bellewether.
This “operetta” combines portions of the unmistakable Piazzola musical language with tango, jazz, & avant garde elements. The unusual libretto is comprised of poems in Spanish and lunfardo, the slang of Buenos Aires. With spoken word, vocals & orchestration, the work centers on María, a woman who explores her identity and darkness. Once she has experienced what is hidden in her soul, she gives birth to a new self.
Director and lead Malena Dayen shared,
“From childhood in Buenos Aires, I’ve known the music of Piazzola and Ferrer; it was part of my childhood’s fabric. Since being cast to sing the role of María several years ago in New York, I’ve dreamt of a production that created a world where María is the woman she is: a soul going through a journey of discovery of power, fragility, darkness, and life’s drive.”
Bare Opera co-founder and executive producer Kirsten Scott concurs,
“This production reinforces our mission to offer fresh, relevant stories through operatic works. When Malena first approached us with her production concept, we recognized the unique and highly salient feminism. Maria is not a stereotypical woman; she is a being who encompasses several facets of humanity.”
